The Rise in Antidepressant Usage

Doctors are prescribing antidepressant medication today more than ever before.

Antidepressant usage started to rise in the 1990s, when a new antidepressant class of drugs came on the market called SSRIs. Zoloft, Paxil, and Prozac, some of the most well-known antidepressants, fall into this category. SSRIs are usually considered safer and have fewer side effects than traditional tricyclic and MAOI antidepressants.

Therefore, it is important to be aware of trends in medications such as antidepressants stay “in the know” for your patients.
